body-focused repetitive behaviours (BFRBs)
Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) are a group of related disorders characterized by repetitive behaviours that cause harm or damage to the body. Common BFRBs include hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (excoriation disorder), and nail biting (onychophagia).
The exact cause of BFRBs is not known, but several factors may contribute, including genetics, neurology and brain function, stress or anxiety, and/or comorbid mental health conditions, such as OCD or depression.
Symptoms of BFRBs include:
Recurrent behaviours such as hair pulling, skin picking, or nail biting, resulting in damage to the body
Attempts to reduce or stop the behaviours
Significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning due to the behaviours
One of the most effective treatment approaches for BFRBs is Habit Reversal Training (HRT), a form of Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) that helps individuals identify triggers and develop alternative responses. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques are often incorporated to help reduce stress and increase awareness of the behaviours. Medications may also be used to help manage symptoms.
